Goblin: Episodes 7-8 Recap

Hello friends! My post is a bit delayed this week because of the holiday. Hope I didn't keep you waiting too long. Let me give you a brief run down of this week's events. Catch up with all my Goblin-related posts here on the Goblin homepage.

Episode 7

There's a bit of panic from Eun Tak when she can't pull out the sword. She worries at first that it means she isn't the bride after all and therefore chooses not to dwell on it. The two go back to the Goblin's place where both the Grim Reaper and Duk Hwa are surprised to see the Goblin, expecting him to be gone forever.

The Goblin starts being a little bit cruel to Eun Tak by teasing her and making her do chores around the house while she's trying to study for the exams. The Grim Reaper calls the Goblin's bluff when he suggests that Eun Tak isn't actually his bride, by asking why he hasn't kicked her out. The Goblin says it's because he's fulfilling his promise to her, but we know better.

Eun Tak takes and does well on her exams and the guys get her a cake to celebrate and the kindness moves her to tears. The Goblin also takes her out to a movie, which turns out to be Train to Busan (which Gong Yoo, the actor that portrays the Goblin, starts in). He's warmed up to her a little bit, but Eun Tak figures out the reason he was acting weird before she tried to pull out the sword was because he was planning on leaving and this upsets her.

The next day she runs into her first love, a crush from childhood named Tae Hee who is now a hunky baseball player. It turns out that the Goblin also has history with Tae Hee as he granted Tae Hee's childhood wish that their family's piano would disappear so he wouldn't have to learn how to play it anymore.

The Goblin gets jealous as the two meet up for ice cream, whereas the Grim Reaper just interrupts their reunion at the ice cream shop when he needs help from Eun Tak talking to Sunny on the phone. He's still unsure of how to react to her when he doesn't have a business card.  Eun Tak answers the phone for him and gives him some advice on how to talk to her, still not knowing it's her boss he's courting.

Sunny and the Grim Reaper go on another date where he confesses that he didn't contact her sooner because he was worried she wouldn't like him if he didn't have a business card. She realizes that's the reason it takes her so long to get in touch with her- when she asks him about something that he doesn't have/know how to answer. But the two clearly like each other and are completely adorable together.

Eun Tak and the Goblin are on a walk together when he has a moment where he really realizes how much she means to him. He hugs her and shortly there after starts to feel immense pain in his chest. Once again, Eun Tak tries to grasp the sword and realizes that this time she can. She starts to pull it out slowly and the Goblin feels even greater pain. Out of instinct, he pushes her away and she goes flying through the air. Luckily, he's able to catch her before she's seriously injured or killed.

Episode 8

The Goblin realizes that he now can finally be granted the end to his life, but it's a scarier thought than ever. It's clear that his feelings for Eun Tak are growing more than he ever expected. Turning the tables from the last episode, Eun Tak starts to get a little jealous when she hears the Goblin talking about his first love, not realizing that he's actually talking about her.

The Grim Reaper saw The Goblin's picture of the queen from the historical part of the drama, who did turn out to be the Goblin's sister, and started crying. Duk Hwa tells the Goblin who interrogates the reaper about this and he doesn't know why, just that the woman seems familiar and moves his heart.

Eun Tak sees the Goblin off on a mission and follows him. She catches up to him just as he's intervening in a man's life for just long enough that his daughter arrives and foils his suicide attempt. He explains that sometimes our family acts as our guardian angels. Later that day, Eun Tak is surprised when the Grim Reaper shows up at her chicken shop.

He didn't know beforehand that it was Sunny's chicken shop that Eun Tak worked at. While he's there, Tae Hee stops by with his baseball friends. The Grim Reaper shows up day after day and both he and Eun Tak keep it a secret that he goes there and that Tae Hee shows up there frequently. But The Grim Reaper ends up finding out about it anyway and is jealous once more.

Later, the Grim Reaper along with a whole bunch of other reapers have been assigned a number of different names from a single traffic accident and therefore are gathered, waiting to do their jobs. The Goblin sees Eun Tak off as she goes for her college interview, but right after she's left he has a vision of the bus crashing and causing a horrific accident that kills many.  He doesn't see Eun Tak in the vision, but knows he can't chance it. He intervenes and stops the accident leaving the Grim Reaper frustrated and the other reapers seriously confused. It isn't that the Grim Reaper wants Eun Tak to die, he just doesn't think that the Goblin should be interfering with people's fates so frequently and carelessly.

Sunny and the Grim Reaper meet up once more. She tells him not to try to change himself or give her answers that she thinks he wants because she likes him the way he is and then proceeds to tell him her real name, Kim Sun and asks him his. We see a flashback to the young King and the Goblin in the Goryeo period and then back to the present day where the Grim Reaper is now in a lot of pain. He wipes Sunny's memory of their meeting that day and sends her away.

The Goblin is alone in a bookstore when he gets an unexpected visitor- Red Grandma- who is confirmed to be god. She tells him that he needs to get the blade out and that every minute he doesn't he's putting Eun Tak in danger. Her purpose is as a tool as the Goblin's bride and if she doesn't fulfill her purpose she doesn't have the right to live. Until he takes out the blade deadly incident after deadly incident will continue to happen to her.

That's all we have for this week in Goblin. Hope you're still loving this drama as much as I am!

Goblin Episodes 5-6 Recap

Hi friends! Goblin is my life right now. Seriously, it's so good. If you haven't been watching it, I think you really should. I'll recap this week's episodes in just a minute, but first I just want to remind you to keep an eye out for the collaboration between myself and two of my Kdrama friends for our first Chingus in Dramaland post which should be coming at you next week. Until then you can catch all my Goblin recaps on my Goblin homepage here. Without further ado, let's talk Goblin.

Episode 5

Episode 5 starts off right as the Goblin comes to realize that he's falling for Eun Tak. You can just tell that he gets a sense it's going to be trouble for him. Meanwhile, the grim reaper has re-encountered Sunny on the bridge where they met. She's irritated that he still hasn't called her, but he explains that he still does not have a phone. She suggests that they go get coffee. He agrees to this, but they have a difficult time finding conversation. But it's when Sunny asks him his name and he realizes he doesn't have one to tell her that he leaves, leaving her both confused and frustrated. Both supernatural beings, the Goblin and Grim Reaper, are dealing with human love issues that they never thought they'd have to.

The Goblin decides to have Eun Tak move into his house as she is the Goblin's bride after all. During the course of him bringing her to his home, she finally asks his name after 5 episodes and we learn that he was born Kim Shin although he's inevitably taken on many aliases over the years. The Grim Reaper is welcoming of Eun Tak moving in because he knows that she'll help the Goblin die. As she doesn't have a bed yet, she stays in Kim Shin's room and he bunks with the Grim Reaper for the night who although doesn't want to ends up putting up with it. They seriously have the best bromance.

In the morning they make her breakfast and she sets down a few rules about dealing with humans-mainly to stop threatening her with their powers and to stop appearing out of thin air and instead call her. Because neither has a phone this is challenging so they get Duk Hwa to bring and introduce them to cell phones. As neither has had one a little hilarity ensues as they try to learn how to use them.  The Grim Reaper is relieved he now has a way to contact Sunny, but the problem remains that he does not have a name to give her.

Eun Tak comes home to find that Kim Shin has had her room decorated while she was gone. She now has her own little piece of home inside of his home which is handy because she needs to start getting ready for exams as she's a high school Senior. Kim Shin keeps sending her snacks while she's studying, but along with the request that she pull his blade out now. She tells him that she has no intention to do that at present as she's got a lot on her plate with the exams. Also, she's worried that he won't want her around once the blade's out, still not knowing he's going to die once it is.

Since they're now roommates Eun Tak and the Grim Reaper try to be friendly and get to know one another. He enlists her help with trying to find a name and they try to have a conversation, but Kim Shin gets jealous. They start arguing and she brings up how he's not yet given her a boyfriend like he promised, when he blurts out that he's her boyfriend. They both are shocked at what came out of his mouth and both run away out of embarrassment.

Meanwhile Kim Shin and Duk Hwa find out about the Grim Reaper's dilemma with calling Sunny and help him take the plunge by dialing her number on his phone.  Kim Shin and Eun Tak run into each other and are both still embarrassed and it acknowledge it to each other and decide to move past it together. Kim Shin brings them to Canada again for a meal and sees a flashback of Eun Tak in 9 years time at the same place alone, getting ready to meet a man and he sheds a tear as he realizes that means he really will be dead and no longer a part of her life at that point. That's where episode 5 ends.

Episode 6

The episode starts off as the Goblin pleads with Eun Tak to take out the sword. She jokingly wonders about what he did earlier in his life to deserve getting the sword stuck into him and asks if he betrayed a king. He reveals that pretty much he did, that he was selfish and because of it a lot of people died and that's why he's been punished. But the fact that he reveals this to Eun Tak makes her feel bad for him, for the fact that she thinks he's lived his life hating himself and tells him she won't take the sword out yet.

Meanwhile, Sunny has set up a double date with the Grim Reaper and her friend. The Grim Reaper brings Duk Hwa along and both ladies are delighted by cutie Chaebol. But The Grim Reaper gets jealous and uses his powers of persuasion to send both Duk Hwa and Sunny's friend away but not before revealing the name that he chose for himself, Kim Woo Bin. It turns out Sunny was only intrigued by Duk Hwa because she knows he's her landlord. She's still very much interested in the Grim Reaper and he in her.

Once again, the Goblin and Grim Reaper bond as they mope over their girl troubles. The Goblin decides he's going to have to withdraw from Eun Tak again as he can tell she likes him and he likes her and it just makes the whole thing even harder. Eun Tak sets her sights on helping another one of her ghosts friends. This time a grandma who wants to give the winning lottery number to her children. Eun Tak helps her out via the Goblin and then finds out that once the ghosts fulfill their destinies, they pass on.

While the Grim Reaper is talking to her about her intentions to remove the blade from the Goblin, he realizes that she still doesn't know that the Goblin will really die once she does. Eun Tak tells the Goblin that she'll remove the sword for him, but now he's not ready again and keeps putting it off. We find out from the Grim Reaper, although he doesn't tell Eun Tak this, that she will have another visit from the Grim Reaper when she's 29 just like she did when she was 9 and 19.

The Goblin gives Eun Tak a few final gifts before he's ready to have the sword removed and then takes Eun Tak to the field where he was revived and given his immortal status to pull out the sword. Originally he was not going to wait until the first snow but then he makes it snow so that he has one last beautiful memory. She gets ready remove the sword, still not knowing what will happen, but whens he goes to pull the sword out, she's not able to grasp it. It slips right through her fingers. They both are confused as to why it's happening, and thinking on her feet Eun Tak determines the way to fix it is through a kiss. So without thinking she reaches onto her toes and kisses him.

That's where our episode ends. Until next week! But before then keep an eye out for our first Chingus in Dramaland post. We're excited and hope you'll tune in.

Goblin: Episodes 3-4 Recap

Hello friends! How's life?  I'm fresh off of finishing this week's episodes and I must say this drama is by far exceeding my expectations-which were high to begin with. Nothing bad has happened yet, but I can tell it's going to be one of those dramas that has the potential to break my heart. Later this week, you'll get to hear more of my opinions on the drama as I collaborate with Tiara and June and we bring you the first post from our new project: Chingus in Dramaland. It should be a lot of fun and I hope you'll join us. But for now, let me bring you up to speed on Goblin. You can follow along with all my Goblin related posts here on the drama homepage.

Episode 3

So when we last left off Eun Tak had been kidnapped and The Goblin and the Grim Reaper showed up.  The Goblin ended up taking out his sword and cutting the kidnapper's car straight in half and then he and the Grim Reaper took Eun Tak away. She tells the Goblin she doesn't hate him anymore after she found out it's thanks to him that she was even born, although it certainly seems like she still is a little bitter at the way he treated her.

The Goblin is still preparing to go over seas, but isn't happy about it.  Eun Tak seems pretty bummed about his leaving as well. The Grim Reaper says he's looking forward to it, but you can tell that he'll be lonely without his new roommate. But before he leaves, he wants to help Eun Tak out in one final way by getting her horrible family out of her hair. He hides gold bars in the house for them to find.

Sunny, Eun Tak's boss at the chicken restaurant, finds out that Eun Tak has been staying there and allows her to continue to do so showing what a cool person she truly is. Later Eun Tak accidentally summons the Goblin which gives them to say some last things to each other before the Goblin leaves and he explains his powers/what he's capable of to her. The Grim Reaper ends up showing up at the cafe they're meeting at, but he tells Eun Tak that he's actually on her side now. What he doesn't reveal is that he wants her to be the Goblin's bride so she can remove the Goblin's sword and he can leave this earth for good finally (and be out of the Reaper's hair).

The night the Goblin and Grim Reaper bond a little when, after accidentally offending him by bringing up that he could have been evil in his previous life, the Goblin tells him he doesn't judge his prior life- he'll hate him either way. The Reaper has some woman issues of his own surmounting as a (not so) chance encounter with Sunny leaves him shook as they both try to buy the same ring from a familiar-looking street vendor (Eun Tak's neighborhood granny who isn't a granny anymore) Both are immediately drawn to each other and have a feeling there's fate between them. Sunny leaves him with her number and the promise that he has to call her.

The Goblin is longing to be called by Eun Tak one more time and she doesn't summon him, but he ends up seeking her out anyway. When he arrives where she's sitting watching the ocean it's raining and he tells her that's because he's sad. It soon stop and he reveals it's because his mood has improved (upon seeing her). But as they realize it's their last goodbye before he leaves it begins to rain again.

That night the Goblin and Grim Reaper are unnerved when there doorbell rings revealing a vistor-when there's never been one before.  It's Eun Tak who found out where the Goblin lived from the ghosts.  She's surprised to see that the Grim Reaper lives with him, but she also has something important to tell the Goblin. It turns out she could see the sword all along.

Episode 4
Even though the Goblin has been waiting for his bride to come along for centuries and has gotten sick of watching his loved ones die, he is still shocked that Eun Tak is in fact his bride and has so many mixed feelings about the fact that his time alive is coming to an end so abruptly. He puts off talking to her until he can sort his thoughts. The Grim Reaper promises to be the one to escort him when it finally is his time to go.

Eun Tak's evil aunt has sold there house and so Eun Tak now has nowhere to live. The Goblin puts her up in the hotel owned by his follower's family even though she begs to live with him. He keeps his distance from her for the next couple things as he deals with the range of emotions that he's feelings. She doesn't like being kept at a distance-assuming that he isn't happy because he's disappointed that it's her that it's his bride and not somebody better. In the meantime the Goblin's nephew "Duk Hwa" is charged with taking care of Eun Tak and he realizes the connection -that she is the Goblin's bride.

The evil aunt and horrible cousin of Eun Tak's get in trouble with the law after trying to cash in the gold they found in Eun Tak's drawer. Turns out it's from America and the fact that they admitted they took it from Eun Tak labels them as even bigger thieves than they were already suspected of being.
Meanwhile, Eun Tak has had enough of being ignored and summons the Goblin with a whole bunch of candles.  He still can't handle the emotions and tries to use alcohol as a means to do so and ends up getting drunk and telling her about the fact that she's the only one who can remove the sword (a fact he had been trying to hide from her up until now).

The next day he's mortified and trying to do recon he goes and picks her up from school and then takes her to Canada for dinner. He still doesn't reveal to her what will happen when she removes the sword, but they agree not to do it yet. She suggests they remove the sword during the first snowfall. While watching Eun Tak running around and being her vibrant happy self, he realizes that he has fallen in love for the first time...and with her.

And that's where our drama concludes this week. Instead of adding my thoughts to the recap, I'll be discussing all my reaction in my Chingus in Dramaland post. Hope you join me next week to find out what happens next, for more memes, or to join the conversation with Chingus in Dramaland.

Goblin: Episodes 1-2 Recap

Hey friends! It's been awhile since I've done consistent posts, hasn't it? Well good news is that I'm bringing back recaps and this time it'll be for Goblin which premiered it's first episode yesterday and second today. I'll do a quick recap for you as well as some memes and you can let me know what you think so far if you've seen it. You can keep up to date with all the Goblin related items I'll be posting on my Goblin homepage here.

Episode 1

In the beginning of the drama, there is is a lot of time jumping so it's a bit hard to follow. We start briefly 19 years ago and introduced to a bright young woman. We then hop back to 1968 in Paris where we meet a mysterious supernatural with the power to help humans played by Gong Yoo. Then we go way way back to the Goryeo period (We've been there recently, haven't we ;) ) where we learn his backstory. He was a fierce and respected warrior that was considered a god by other soldiers, but who earned the envy of a jealous king. Although he killed many enemies for the kingdom, the king ended up killing many of his loved ones and innocent people before making him die himself.  Because there were so many people who adored and respected him, the gods decided to bring him back but because he had also killed so many people on the battlefield, his punishment was that he would come back as a Goblin and would have to live until he met the one woman, the Goblin's bride, who could see the sword that had pierced (and killed) him and remove it.

We now move forward in time again to 1998 and are introduced to another supernatural, a grim reaper/god of death played by Lee Dong Wook. The Goblin has also returned to Korea after a stint away where he meets up with the ancestors of his loyalest followers from the Goryeo period. Their family has maintained their relationship with him and assisted him all this time.

The Goblin is sitting outside enjoying a beer when he hears the cries of a woman who has been the victim of a hit and run and is lying in the snow dying. She is pregnant and she begs anyone to save her. He shows up and she begs him to save the baby that she is carrying. It looks as though she has died, but the Goblin revives her. Minutes later the Grim Reaper shows up, but she's already gone and now he has unfinished business as he was supposed to collect both the mother and the unnamed child.

9 years later and both the mother and the child, now named Eun Tak and played by Kim Go Eun, seem to be living happily although the child sees spirits. It's her birthday and she goes home to blow out the candles on her cake with her mom but then she realizes the mom that is there and that she's talking to is really her mom's spirit and that her mom died. We get the sense that her mom knew it was coming. Likely the Grim Reaper caught up with her. He also finds Eun Tak and seems to want to take her, but the strange old neighbor lady shows up and tells him to leave...and then he does.

One more time jump now to where our story takes place. Eun Tak is now a high school Senior and it's her 19th birthday. She lives with her aunt and cousins who of course pretty much hate her. She sneaks off with a birthday cake to celebrate her birthday by herself. Although she swore she'd never make a wish on her birthay candles again, because they never come true, she is desperate this year and wishes for a job, that her family would leave her alone, and for a boyfriend.  Just then the Goblin shows up and asks her why she summoned him. She says she didn't and believe him to be a ghost.

They part ways and meanwhile, it looks like the Goblin will have to move on again as he can't stay in one country too long without being notice since he's immortal. His follower's descendant Duk Wa, played by Yook Sung Jae, who considers the Goblin an uncle, ending up renting out the Goblin's house to no one other than the Grim Reaper, to try to earn him money. Because Duk Wa signed a contract with the Grim Reaper, the Goblin can't kick him out because he knows something bad will happen to Duk Wa if he does. So now the Grim Reaper and the Goblin are unwilling roommates.

Eun Tak ends up summoning the Goblin again and using her deductive reasoning figures out that he is a goblin although he denies it. She tells him that she is the Goblin's bride, or at least that's what ghosts have been telling her all his life and shows him an odd-shaped birthmark on her shoulder as evidence. He seems like he believes what she's saying could be true, but realizes it's not when she doesn't have the ability to see the sword. He goes to leave and uses his powers to make the door into a portal to Canada. Eun Tak follows through the door after him and ends up in Canada as well. He's shocked as shes shouldn't have been able to follow through with him.

Episode 2

She's obvioulsy excited to be in Canada. He lets her do a little exploring with him and then tells her to wait as he goes to visit the graves of his follower's descendants that are buried there that he lost over the years. He sits there and mourns, making it obviously how painful it's been for him to lose so many people that he loves. They go back home and she ends up figuring out how she summoned him- by blowing out a candle/match and summons him a few more times. The Goblin realizes not even the Grim Reaper can follow him through portals so there really is something special about Eun Tak. He gets curious about her and ends up going to her without being summoned. She's mad because she still hasn't gotten a job or boyfriend like her promised but he tells her she has to keep putting in effort.

The next day she walks into a chicken shop run by a eccentric and pretty woman played by Yoo In Na and gets a job. Eun Tak laminates a leaf that she brought back from Canada and is planning on giving it as a gift to the Goblin. She summons him and at the same time the Grim Reaper shows up. He has been looking for her for 10 years and wants to take her, but then the Goblin shows up and stops and also reveals at the time that he is in fact a Goblin. She gets mad when he tells her again she's not he Goblin's bride and feels rejected. He ends up feeling bad and wants to go see her.

When he goes to her aunt's house the Grim Reaper is there looking for her as well. Eun Tak knew she had to move now that the Grim Reaper knows where she lives so she spends the night at the chicken shop. She learns that night from some ghosts that the Goblin saved her mom and her before she was born and that she owes her life to the Goblin.

The next day her aunt comes looking for her at the chicken shop, but the shop owner threatens her to make her leave.  One her way home loan sharks come looking for her. She has promised them Eun Tak's mom's insurance money-which she has been put in charge of as Eun Tak's guardian. She hasn't been able to find the balance book for the checking account and believes Eun Tak has it and so that is what she tells the thugs. They show up at Eun Tak's school and kidnap her.

Eun Tak is struggling and tries to blow out one of the thugs' lighter to summon the Goblin but is unsuccessful.  The other thug is threatening her and then the birthmark on her back lights up and strange things happen. The driver stops the car because all the street lights on the back country road that they're on go out. Slowly, the shadows of two figures approach the car and as they come into the light you can see it's the Goblin and the Grim Reaper.

Thoughts:
I'll throw a few personal thoughts in here since the drama just started and some of you might be looking for my opinion. Personally I'm loving it so far. The beginning had a lot of story to tell so I was worried it might get a little stuck, but it didn't really even though a good chunk of the first episode took place in Goryeo.  I haven't seen Cheese In The Trap, so I didn't know what to expect from Kim Go Eun, but I love the way she portrays Eun Tak. She has just the right balance of savy and vulnerabillity. My favorite things so far is probably the Goblin/Grim Reaper Bromance.  It's hilarious and amazing and I love every second of it. I have a hard time believing the Grim Reaper as the "bad guy" I think he'll turn to Eun Tak's side before long and it'll be the three of them against the higher ups pretty soon.

What are y'all thinking of this drama so far?
